What Really Causes Dry, Chapped Lips

The Science

Ever wondered why our lips seem to suffer more than other parts of our skin, especially during the colder months? The explanation centers on the distinct structure of lip skin.

Our lips don't have the robust barrier present in other skin areas, making it hard for them to hold onto moisture. This is mainly because they lack the outermost skin layer, the stratum corneum, which serves as a protective shield elsewhere on our body. As a result, our lips are more prone to releasing moisture into the air, leading to dryness and cracking.

The dryness is not just due to the inherent features of our lips but external factors can further worsen the condition. During winter, decreased humidity and harsh winds can further aggravate moisture loss, intensifying the dryness and making our lips even more uncomfortable.

Despite common misconceptions, the dryness isn't because our lips lack oil glands. Our lips actually possess unique oil glands, known as Fordyce spots or glands, which are different from those linked with hair follicles. Yet, the lip skin struggles to hold onto the moisture from these oils as effectively as facial skin does. This explains why individuals on medications like Accutane, which reduces oil gland size, often end up with severely dry chapped lips.

Are Your Lip Products Irritating Your Lips?

In addition to factors that make our lips prone to dryness, certain lip balms or products can exacerbate the issue. For some individuals, lip balm addiction may be a result of irritant or allergic contact dermatitis caused by the lip balm itself.

Common allergens found in lip balms include castor oil, fragrances, cinnamates, and propolis. These ingredients can lead to inflammation, irritation, and further drying of the lips, creating a cycle of constantly needing to apply lip balm.

Avoid lip exfoliation: Unlike the skin on the rest of our body, our lips have a thinner or absent stratum corneum. Exfoliating the lips can remove the healthy top layer of mucosal skin and cause further irritation.

Avoid sugar scrubs: While sugar scrubs may seem like a popular choice for exfoliating the lips, they can actually worsen dryness and lead to a condition known as lip licker's dermatitis. The saliva produced as a result of frequent lip licking exacerbates dryness and irritation.

Never Blended

“Made in Italy” doesn’t mean what you think. Major olive oil brands save money by blending low-quality, old oils (some olive, some not) from all over the globe while slapping a country name on the label. That’s shady! Graza is never blended, and it always comes from one place.

(Real) EVOO

Real extra virgin oil is made from olives that are harvested early (fall or winter) and pressed ASAP so the oil stays fresh, delicious, and full of polyphenols (that healthy stuff that makes you live a long time). Most bottles labeled “extra virgin” aren’t the real deal, but Graza is and always will be.
