L.A. Refining Serum FAQ: How Our New Lactic Serum Fits Into Your Routine

Why is L.A. Refining Serum unique?

This powerful yet gentle serum is formulated with dual exfoliating acids of 12% Lactic Acid and Gluconolactone (PHA) to exfoliate and improve clarity. This unique formula polishes away the build-up of dead skin cells and excess sebum. LA Refining Serum's formula hydrates with a soothing botanical hyaluronic acid blend and brightens with licorice extract revealing visibly firm, and supple skin.

Who is it for?

LA Refining Serum is excellent for normal, dry, combination, acne-prone, and oily skin types. If your skin is particularly sensitive, we recommend starting with Lactic Acid Refining Serum as a 15-minute mask rather than a leave-on treatment and then trying it as an overnight treatment as your skin builds up tolerance. LA Refining Serum helps with the appearance of hyperpigmentation, dark spots, melasma, skin congestion, and dehydrated skin with texture.

How do I use it?

We recommend using LA Refining Serum once a day, either in the AM or PM, depending on your skin's needs. Apply 1-2 pumps to clean skin.

Which products work well with L.A. Refining Serum?

Once you have established that your skin loves LA Refining Serum, then you can experiment with layering it with your other serums. We would suggest only layering your LA Refining Serum with other serums 2 times a week, again start slow and work your way up.
We also strongly encourage you to use a moisturizer when using actives AND do not forget SPF. LA Refining Serum pairs nicely with our Peptide Night Cream or Soothe + Recovery Cream! We recommend wearing SPF as the last step in your AM routine. Using SPF every day, you will notice the benefits of your skincare faster.
  • LA Refining Serum can be layered with Niacinamide and Retinol; it really comes down to your skin and what it can tolerate.
  • What it doesn't play well with:
    • Avoid mixing Lactic Acid with benzoyl peroxide, which can be found in our 24 Hour Acne Serum.
    • Retinol: To start, we would recommend alternating 1-2 evenings when using retinol and LA Refining Serum. Over time, when following a proper exfoliation routine your skin will build a tolerance and allow other skincare (serums, moisturizers) to penetrate deeper and work harder.

Where to use it in your routine:

As a general rule of thumb, your products should usually be applied from thinnest consistency to thickest consistency. L.A. Refining Serum is a slightly thicker serum, so it would be applied after your more lightweight serums (like Needle-less Serum). But for the perfect placement in your routine, please refer to our Routine Builder, where you can choose which products you have, and we'll give you the correct order of usage.
